Dr. Shundar Lin is running for Commissioner of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District

I live in Chicago with my wife, a daughter and three out of five grandchildren. I am running to give my family and all Cook County residents clean and safe water

As a Commissioner, I will focus on

Keeping our water clean, including being the only candidate to make the zero fentanyl pledge
Promoting advanced technologies for wastewater treatment, including increasing the use of autonomous technology to patrol our waters
Improving our region’s management of storm water
Holding the District accountable to the taxpayers in its use of taxpayer funds- passing a balanced budget

Ending cronyism and ensuring a fair bidding process for all engineering projects
Helping to better educate the public about the District’s role in the protection of our water and lands to schools, colleges, town hall meeting, civic groups, etc.

  • Hold a Ph.D. in Sanitary Engineering, and have spent a career as a water scientist for the State Water Survey (35 years)
  • Served as a Board member of the Illinois Pollution Control Board
  • Am one of the world’s leading water and wastewater scientists for more than 50 years of practical and academic experience in the field of environmental engineering
  • Have published near 100 papers, notes, and reports on water and wastewater, as well as three books:
    • Water and Wastewater Calculation Manual, 3rd ed. 2014, McGraw-Hill Book Co.
    • Handbook of Environmental Engineering Calculations. With C. C. Lee, 2nd ed. 2012, McGraw-Hill Book Co.

  • 1986 Water Quality Division Best Paper Award for "Giardia lamblia and Water Supply" from the American Water Works Association.
  • 1991 and 1992, Nominated for Illinois Department of Public Health’s Robert M. Scott award.
  • Developed the enrichment-temperature acclamation method for recovery enhancement of stressed fecal coliform in chlorinated water and wastewater. The method has been adopted in the Standard Method for Examination of Water and Wastewater since the 18th edition (1990).
  • Life member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Water Works Association, and the Water Environment Federation.
